The DPF regeneration process is a method used to remove accumulated soot and other particles from the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). To regen the engine needs to rev and be hot so driving regularly on motorways or fast A roads will see it regening fine. Doing school runs and sitting idling a lot with 5 mile runs daily will see DPF clogging up. Its not really necessary to force a regen on a properly driven car.
