To make these distinctions even more complex, outside of the United States the Russell Terrier is called the Jack Terrier enthusiasts often find themselves puzzled when trying to differentiate between the Jack Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier. The confusion primarily stems from their shared origins. Originally known as Jack Russell Terriers, these lively and spirited dogs were bred by Reverend John Russell in 19th century England.

The popular Jack Russell Terrier was developed in Devonshire in the south of England in the late 1800's so as to hunt foxes. Often believed to be the Parson Russell Terrier, the Jack Russell Terrier was developed by Parson John Russell. This is where the dog gets his breed name from.

In comparison, the Jack Russell Terrier Association of America wanted to be recognized by the American Kennel Club, which it was in 2000. So that the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America and Jack Russell Terrier Association of America were not confused, the American Kennel Club renamed the dog the Parson Russell Terrier.

The original Russell terrier was bred for hunting foxes. Reverend John Russell developed the breed in Devonshire during the 1800s. Today, they retain their instincts to bark and chase small prey.
