There are lots of possible faults (below), but you would apparently be most worried about fault C1556 as it may mean replacing the handbrake mechanism. You should first check battery age and condition, connectors, earth points and the harness for a possible rub through near the pedal gear support stay.
Finally, the one thing that is really bugging me about this fault is that with this fault the auto park brake does not engage and disengage as it should. However, when I first start the car up if I press the accelerator quick it disengages as normal - almost as if the cars computer brain hasn't had time to remind itself that theirs a fault.
